Confirmation of Membership

Requests for confirmation of member status may be directed to our Records Department.

Once issued, Certificates may be :
collected from the Law Society's offices in Pietermaritzburg in person or by a courier company (to be arranged by the applicant) ;
sent to a postal address ;
sent to a Docex address.
Items are not sent via registered post.
Please make sure the relevant information is included on the Application Form

A copy of the requirements will be emailed to you including banking details for the fee of R228.00

Please allow three working days after date of payment of fee for the Certificate : the application has to be processed in five departments. Certificates are issued from Monday to Thursday

On issuing, a copy of the Certificate will be emailed to you and the original dispatched according to instructions on the application form


Regional Court Appearance Certificates

Please note :
It may take three working days to process an application, providing no queries are raised

Magistrate's Court Certificates may take two to three weeks

In terms of Section 8(1) of the Attorney's Act :

Any candidate attorney who has previously practised as an advocate for at least one year ; or has served for at least one year under his or her contract of articles or contract of service ; or has at least one year's experience as a state advocate, state prosecutor or magistrate is eligible for a certificate of appearance in the Regional Court.

A certificate of appearance must be requested in writing by the principal.

Candidate attorneys who have previously served as advocates, magistrates, or prosecutors are required to submit written confirmation by previous employers regarding their previous status of employment. This must be attached to the letter by the principal.

A fee of R114.00 is payable to the Society for an amended appearance certificate.

Cheques must be made out to KWAZULU NATAL LAW SOCIETY.

Cash is payable at the PMB Law Society counter.

Cheque made out to KwaZulu Natal Law Society.

Cash at the KwaZulu Natal Law Society counter.

Payments by postal order will incur an additional cost of R 33.00 which will be added to your fees, as this is what the post office charges for a cheque to be issued. Your cost will be R147.00.

You are encouraged to make EFT payments to the Society as this will be at the allocated cost ONLY, which is R114.00.

Note :
Should you opt to pay by postal order and not include the additional R33.00 your application will be considered incomplete and accordingly not be processed.

We will require a copy of your LLB or BProc degree. If you have a BProc you need to have practised for three continuous years after Admission in order to qualify for the Certificate

You must currently be practising as an attorneyand a member of the KZN Law Society
